Spring,
storms, and warmer temperatures are finally here! As we enter
this month, we are approaching the semi-annual black belt test. Those
students testing for black tips, credit tests, and black belts will test together
on Saturday, April 30th. The test will start at 1:30 pm and typically
lasts 1.5 - 2 hours. For more information on the black belt test, students
can check out the computer in the studio.
Students who have made 3rd quarter honor roll should submit their names to
Craig Stoll for inclusion in the
next newsletter.
Students from the school participated in two tournaments during the past month,
one in Akron and one in Oxford. The results from the tournaments are
included in this newsletter.
The school sponsored
tournament is scheduled for May 7 at Fairfield Intermediate School located on
Donald Drive beginning at 11:00 am.
This is the 5th year our school has sponsored this tournament. For our
students who have thought about competing but never gotten around to attending
a tournament, this is the ideal first tournament. The fees are reduced for
our students and the tournament is located near the studio. If you have
questions about participating in the tournament, see David Huffstutler or one of the other
black belts.
In addition to participants, we are also looking for volunteers for
our tournament. Volunteers may register online or contact
David Huffstutler.

As a reminder to all the sparring students, no sparring classes
are held on the
night of Junior Belt Testing. Parents should expect the Junior Belt Test
will be approximately 1 - 1.5 hours long.
One of the reasons people take a martial arts or kick boxing class is to
develop an ability to defend themselves. One of the first key steps to
being able to defend yourself is to develop habits that don't require you to
defend yourself. Some things that you can do are:
Be Prepared
-
Be aware of the people around you
-
Be aware of locations that make you vulnerable to crime, such as alleys and
dark parking lots
Street Precautions
-
Travel with a friend when practical
-
Stay in well lit locations
-
Walk close to the curb and avoid doorways, bushes, and alleys where someone
could hide
-
Walk confidently and at a steady pace
-
Make eye contact with people when you are walking
-
Do not respond to conversation from strangers on the street
-
If you carry a purse, carry it close to your body and keep your keys
separate and preferably on your person
Office Security
-
If you work outside normal business hours, be sure that the outside door is
locked - in some locations, you may also want to lock your office door
-
If you work late, be sure that people know that you will be working late and
try to find a friend or security person to walk with you to your vehicle
-
In an elevator, it is best to be near the control panel so that you can ring
the alarm should a person assault you in the elevator
-
Know your building exits
-
Before leaving a building at night, be sure to look around for suspicious
activity
These tips were taken from the
Los Angeles Police Department, which has a great web site for personal security
information, e.g. rape prevention, identity theft prevention, ATM safety tips,
etc.
If one of your goals is personal safety, then as you train, try to focus on
developing your strength and speed and practice your one steps. The one
step and self defense techniques can work, but you must be able to execute them
in a real defense situation and that confidence comes with practice.
The
AAU Region 6 Championship was held on Saturday, February 26th, 2005.
The Amateur Athletic Union tournament was in Akron, Ohio.
Several of our students participated in this tournament and placed.
The students who placed in their events are listed below.
Please congratulate them on their participation in the
tournament and their success.

This month we will look at self defense against someone attempting to choke your
from the front. There are many self defense techniques against this
attack, e.g. a simple front kick to the groin. However, we will be looking
at techniques that can be applied after the person has begun to establish the
choke. This
Self Defense - Front Choke
link provides one basic approach to defending yourself against a front
choke hold. In addition to this basic technique, we will look at one or two
other techniques that you can apply.
The other self defense technique that we will consider this month is
Self Defense - Bear Hug from Behind Around
the Arms. The bear hug self defense link also contains some other
great escapes from front chokes.
The Medford site, listed below provided the example of a
front choke escape and is a great reference site for grappling techniques.
Check out the site's technique of the month.

Adult
training in grappling based on Jiu-jitsu is offered on Saturday mornings 11:45
am to 12:30 pm. I had difficulty finding a link to an animated .gif or video
for the techniques we will study this month. We will look a a scissor
sweep take down from the breakfall position. This is a self defense
technique used against an opponent who is still standing and approaches you while you are on
the ground. The other technique that we will look at is a Front
Gi or Lapel Choke. This is a very basic choke. Both of these
techniques are available on our school's CDROM.
