This marks the first of three summer newsletters.  These newsletters will be shorter - hey, I like being outside instead of in front of the computer. <smile>

At last, we can enjoy the warm summer months.  Each year, I find myself anxious for the longer summer days and  activities.  We want to remind everyone that healthy habits during the summer include drinking plenty of fluids and protecting yourself from excessive exposure to the sun.  People exercising in the studio need to be careful to increase their fluid intake to compensate for warmer studio temperatures.

Please send in the names of studentswho made honor roll during the 4th quarter of the school year and indicate whether they had straight A's.  We will want to recognize these students in the July newsletter.

The studio will be closed on Monday, July 4th.

While we try to not miss recognizing a person who has made honor roll or placed in a tournament, we missed a few people in the last newsletter.  They are listed below along with their accomplishment.

Junior Belt Test Friday, June 24th at 6:30 pm
Adult Belt Test Saturday, June 25th at 12:30 pm

As a reminder to all the sparring students, no sparring classes are held on the night of Junior Belt Testing.  Parents should expect the Junior Belt Test to last approximately 1 - 1 and 1/2 hours.

If you will be out of class for vacation this summer, we wish you a safe and enjoyable vacation.

Graduates

Two of our student's graduated from high school this year.  This is an exciting time for these graduates as they contemplate their future plans.  They provided us a little information about themselves and their plans for the future.  Please be sure to congratulate them when you see them in class.

Allison Capek

Allison Capek is a 1st Dan black belt in our school and has helped teach classes for the past year. Allison  graduates from Fairfield High School on June 5th.  Allison finishes her high school career 5th in her class and with academic recognition in Biology, Art and Calculus.   Allison received a full academic scholarship to Ohio State University where she plans to major in biology.  Allison hopes to continue to medical school. She will be the first generation from her family to attend college.

Tyler Lampl

Tyler Lampl received his black belt in April and has been active in both the Taekwondo and the Grappling classes in our school. Tyler will graduate from Hamilton High School on June 7th.  Tyler plans to attend Ohio University where he will major in Computer Science Engineering.  Tyler looks forward to continuing martial arts in college and hopes to blend in another grappling martial art, such as judo, hapkido, or jiu-jitsu with his training.

The school-sponsored Tournament was held on May 7th at Fairfield Intermediate School located on Donald Drive.  The tournament was attended by over 200 martial artists.  Obviously, this tournament is one of the best attended by our students.

We need pictures from the tournament for our web site and for the bulletin board at the studio.  If you have pictures, please bring them in!  The following students received trophies during the competition.

Boxing drills will be added on Monday nights as part of the normal adult  Taekwondo class. For an introductory time, David is providing a pair of gloves to the regular adult students.  Students should bring their gloves on Monday night for this class.  David stressed that boxing drills will only be light contact.  He added the drills to provide more variety to the workout and to build a greater awareness of punching and punching defense techniques.

I found a good article that addresses the proper care of boxing gloves at the following site:

http://www.boxinggyms.com/tips/gloves_smell.htm.

In essence, this article suggests being sure to air the gloves out between uses, e.g. don't leave them in your equipment bag.  Also the article suggests placing socks with cedar chips in the gloves to reduce the odor.  The article offers other suggestions as well.

Let the summer games begin!  We are planning a smaller summer games tournament in late July or early August.  The tournament will not be as large as the May tournament and will be a super time for first time competitors to experience tournament competition and for more seasoned competitors to hone their skills.  The date for the tournament will be announced in the coming weeks.  In the past, the tournament has been a lot of fun and everyone has had a great time.  The tournament will have the same basic categories as the May tournament: sparring, breaking, and forms.  Stay tuned for more information.
